Why Do Poodles Follow You Everywhere?

If you have a Poodle, you probably already know what I mean when I say you rarely go anywhere alone. You get up to go into the kitchen, and your Poodle gets up too. You walk into another room, and there they are. You sit down, and within a few minutes you have a Poodle sitting beside you, watching whatever you're doing. It can make you wonder, why do Poodles follow you everywhere?

Why Do Poodles Follow You Everywhere?

If you have a Poodle, you probably already know what I mean when I say you rarely go anywhere alone. You get up to go into the kitchen, and your Poodle gets up too. You walk into another room, and there they are. You sit down, and within a few minutes you have a Poodle sitting beside you, watching whatever you're doing.

It can make you wonder, why do Poodles follow you everywhere?

The simple answer is that Poodles are very people-oriented dogs. They enjoy being with their families and they like to be involved in what's going on around them.

Poodles Are Curious

Poodles are incredibly intelligent, and that intelligence comes with a lot of curiosity. They want to know what you're doing and where you're going. If you suddenly get up and leave the room, your Poodle may think there must be a reason. Maybe you're going outside. Maybe you're going to get something to eat. Maybe you're getting their leash. Whatever it is, they want to know about it!

This curiosity is one of the things I love about Poodles. They aren't just sitting in the background. They are paying attention to their people and their surroundings.

They Like Being Close to Their People

Poodles tend to form very strong bonds with their families. Once they consider you their person, they often want to spend a lot of time with you.

That doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong when they follow you from room to room. Sometimes they simply enjoy your company.

Think about it from their point of view. You're their family. You're the person who feeds them, talks to them, plays with them, takes them outside and gives them affection.

Of course they want to know where you are!

Sometimes They're Hoping Something Fun Is About to Happen

Poodles are also very good at learning routines. If you normally go to the kitchen before giving them breakfast, they're going to remember that. If you grab your shoes before going for a walk, they may recognize the sound of those shoes. And if you head toward the treat cabinet, well... they probably already know exactly where you're going. Their intelligence allows them to pick up on little things that we don't always realize they're noticing.

Your Poodle May Just Want Your Attention

Sometimes the reason is even simpler.

Your Poodle wants you.

They may want to be petted, played with, talked to or simply allowed to sit beside you.

Poodles are social dogs, and many of them genuinely enjoy being part of the family's everyday life.

I've always thought that's one of the special things about having a Poodle. They have a way of making themselves part of whatever you're doing.

Even if you're just folding laundry.

There's a Difference Between Following You and Being Anxious

Following you around the house isn't necessarily a sign of separation anxiety.

A Poodle can be perfectly happy and still prefer to stay close to you.

What you want to watch for is a dog that becomes extremely distressed when you leave. Excessive barking, destructive behavior, pacing or an inability to settle when left alone can be signs that something more is going on.

If you notice those kinds of behaviors, it's a good idea to talk with your veterinarian or a qualified dog behavior professional.

Teaching puppies that it's okay to spend some quiet time on their own is also an important part of raising a well-adjusted dog.

So, Why Does Your Poodle Follow You Everywhere?

Most of the time, it's probably a combination of things.

They're curious.

They're intelligent.

They've learned your routines.

They enjoy being included.

And most importantly, they love being around their people.

If your Poodle follows you from room to room, you may eventually get used to having a little shadow trailing behind you.

And if you're like me, you may find that you wouldn't have it any other way.

That's one of the things that makes living with a Poodle so special.
